EHV-1 is a fairly common disease that causes respiratory symptoms and abortions in horses. Vaccines for this virus are available and are strongly recommended for all horses.
Equine herpesvirus does not transfer from horses to humans, but humans can transfer the virus from horse to horse. It is important that groomers are educated as to the seriousness of EHV and implement a management plan that minimizes the risk of an outbreak.
Many horses are latently infected with EHV-1 and can remain in a latent state for most of their lives. Much like the herpesvirus in humans.
