Question: I have had HSV-2 for 6 years and take 500 mg of Valtrex everyday for suppression. I rarely gets outbreaks, until recently I got one sore. How long after the sore clears up visually can I assume that it’s safe to have sex again? Of course I know it’s never 100% safe, but I am just curious when I can assume that I’m back to “safer” mode.
Answer: You should talked to your doctor about increasing your Valtrex dose when you have recurrences.
Usually within 5 days, the shedding stops if you increase the dose to the recommended OB dose when on suppressive therapy. Waiting until the skin has healed to the point there are no visible signs is always a good idea.
