Mylan Inc. has started selling a generic version of Novartis AG’s antiviral drug Famvir.
Mylan said Wednesday that it is selling famciclovir, the drug’s generic name, in doses of 125 milligrams, 250 milligrams and 500 milligrams.
Famciclovir is mainly used to treat herpes zoster, more commonly known as shingles. It is also sometimes used for genital herpes and coldsores.
Mylan said U.S. revenue from famciclovir totaled $196 million in 2010. It was already available in generic forms.
