How long does the first herpes outbreak last?

Question:

I believe I’m having my first herpes outbreak and its extremely uncomfortable. My doctor didn’t give me any medication because I’m awaiting the test results to see if I do in fact have herpes.

The most uncomfortable part is the one really painful sore I have on my labia and it makes it hard to sit down. How long will this outbreak last and is there anything I can do to relieve the pain (home remedies) or make the outbreak go away faster?

Answer:

Outbreaks typically last between 1-3 weeks on average. You may want to go back to your doctor and get some medication. Some times doctors will give medication as a precaution. Acyclovir is a generic that can be obtained rather affordably.

You can try taking pain pills such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen and sit in a warm tub of water with Epsom salts for 10-20 minutes. Lysine may help some – it’s worth a try. And I know this sounds strange, but when I had my first outbreak someone told me to apply Blistex to the sores and it worked!

Those are the immediate choices. If you can wait a couple of days – I would strongly encourage you to try H-Away – it’s a topical ointment that I personally use and apply at the first hint of outbreak onset. It’s a little more affordable then Dynamiclear which is my preferred topical treatment for those stubborn outbreaks.

You can genuinely find a bottle of both in my medicine cabinet because like most people, I don’t have insurance and can’t afford Valtrex. But even at that, Valtrex treats from the inside which can take a few days – but I want immediate relief – and that comes in the form of H-ColdSores and Dynamiclear.

Good luck!
